Klassisch zu finden sind Gargoyles an Dachvorsprüngen von gotischen Kathedralen, repräsentativen Bauten und Brunnen, wo sie einerseits eine architektonische Funktion übernehmen, mit ihren Fratzen aber auch das Böse aus den Gebäuden fernhalten sollen.
